If you commute daily between Dubai and Sharjah, an important change is on the way.

Starting this Sunday, Dubai will add two new lanes to part of the Emirates Road to reduce traffic on the route between Sharjah and the outskirts of Dubai.

This project will develop a 5-kilometer section of the Emirates Road, between Sharjah and the Al Amardi area on the outskirts of Dubai. With this change, the number of lanes will increase from 6 to 8, and the capacity for vehicles will rise from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority states that the main goal of this plan is to reduce travel time on this route by up to 25%; a change that could be noticeable for the thousands of people commuting daily between the two emirates.

However, this is just part of the Emirates Road development program. This 110-kilometer route, known as E611, is one of the main alternative routes for drivers from Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah, providing access to Abu Dhabi without passing through central Dubai.

In another part of this program, a project worth 750 million dirhams is underway to develop 25 kilometers of the Emirates Road from Sharjah to Umm Al-Quwain. This plan increases the number of lanes from 3 to 5 and boosts the route's capacity by 65%.

Additionally, the intersection number 7 of this road will be upgraded with the construction of 6 new bridges; a project that will increase its capacity to 13,200 vehicles per hour.

Ultimately, the goal of this set of projects is clear: to reduce commuting time by up to 45% for drivers traveling from Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al-Quwain, and Sharjah towards Dubai.
