Dubai International Airport is preparing for a journey where you will experience less queuing, fewer stops, and even less need to show your passport and boarding pass.

Dubai Airport (DXB) has announced that it will continue to develop facial recognition and biometric systems; technology that identifies passengers in areas such as check-in, passport control, lounge entry, and boarding. Currently, smart gates also allow eligible passengers to pass through passport control simply by looking at the camera.

In addition, self-service options are set to expand; meaning more passengers will be able to check in, obtain boarding passes and luggage tags, and drop off their bags without visiting the counter.

Another change is the creation of a new system for the departure of passengers whose flights are parked in areas far from the terminal. Details of this plan have not yet been announced, but its aim is to simplify the route these passengers take to reach their aircraft.

The airport is also improving traffic routes and waiting areas to reduce congestion and ensure smoother passenger movement.

These changes come as the use of biometric technologies among passengers is also on the rise; according to a 2025 IATA survey, 74% of travelers said they would support the use of biometric data if it eliminates the need for passport and boarding pass checks.

In the first half of 2026, DXB Airport handled 31.5 million passengers; a figure that is 31.3% lower than the same period last year. However, monthly traffic in the second quarter rose from 3.5 million passengers in April to 5 million in June, and the airport expects the recovery to accelerate with the return of flights and the start of the winter season.
