A fake online store has squandered years of savings of people in Dubai. Dubai police have reported the arrest of a 6-member gang that was withdrawing money from victims' accounts by stealing their credit card information.
The incident began when customers entered their credit card information on a fake online store. The gang members used this information to make unauthorized purchases and transferred the money to digital wallets.
They even created separate bank accounts and digital wallets to receive the stolen money. Part of the victims' credit card information was also sold to other fraudsters so they could misuse this information as well.
One of the victims, an employee of a private company, said that one morning he woke up to multiple text messages about money being withdrawn from his account; money that he had saved over several years from his salary.
He said he was asleep during these withdrawals and had not made any purchases. After seeing the messages, he reported the matter to Dubai police.
This complaint, along with similar reports, initiated an investigation by the General Department of Criminal Investigations of Dubai Police. After field and surveillance investigations, all 6 members of the gang were identified and arrested in a coordinated operation.
During this operation, police discovered stolen credit cards and checkbooks that were used in the gang's illegal activities.
The police's advice to residents of the UAE: Before entering banking information on online stores, ensure the website's credibility and do not share your sensitive banking information with unknown individuals or entities.
If you notice any unknown transactions in your account, you can report the matter through the Dubai police contact center at 901, the Police Eye service, or the electronic crime department in the official police app and website.
