Every practitioner and clinic is document-checked by hand before publicationHow we verify
In Dubai both optical shops and eye doctors carry out eye tests, but they are not the same thing: one gives you a glasses prescription, the other is a doctor who diagnoses and treats eye disease. If you have a medical problem rather than a vision-correction question, you want the second.

Common questions about eye doctors & ophthalmologists in Dubai
How do I choose the best eye doctor in Dubai?
Ophthalmology has sub-specialities of its own — retina, cornea, cataract, refractive surgery — and a doctor who is excellent in one is not automatically the right one for another. So decide which yours is first, then ask whether the doctor performs the procedure themselves or refers it on, and whether the imaging equipment is on site.
What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can diagnose disease, prescribe medication and, where needed, operate. An optometrist mainly measures vision and prescribes glasses or contact lenses.
Does insurance cover an eye test?
A medical consultation is usually covered by health insurance, but glasses and lenses are often separate or capped. Check the terms of your own plan before you go.
Should I bring my old prescription?
Yes. Your previous prescription, or the glasses themselves, shows the doctor how much your vision has changed — and that comparison is sometimes more useful than today's number on its own.
