Which car retains its value in the used car market?
If you plan to sell your car in a few years or exchange it for a newer model, the purchase price is not the only important factor; how much the car retains its value can also impact the true cost of ownership.
A new study by dubizzle Cars on the used car market in the UAE shows that Toyota ranks first among the brands surveyed, retaining 65% of its initial value.
This study compared cars from model years 2021 to 2023 under similar conditions, considering brand, model, trim, year of manufacture, and GCC or non-GCC specifications.
Toyota has retained an average of 87% of its value after the first year; this figure drops to 75% after the second year and reaches 65% after three years.

After Toyota, Lexus and RAM each retain 61%. Nissan and Honda have each retained 60% of their value. Mazda, GMC, Jeep, and Hyundai also rank next in this study with 59%.
Of course, these numbers do not mean that all models of a brand retain their value at the same rate; the data has been analyzed at the brand level and for a specific group of production years.
For buyers in the UAE, value retention can be very important when selling, exchanging, or upgrading a car. However, the actual selling price also depends on factors such as mileage, condition of the car, specifications, demand, and market conditions.
Buyers should not only look at the current purchase price when choosing a car but also consider the car's value over the years of ownership.
In fact, a car that has a higher purchase price today may retain a larger portion of its initial value when resold; this can change part of the true cost of car ownership.
