When does unemployment insurance compensation stop in the UAE and what factors affect your eligibility?
The involuntary loss of employment insurance (ILOE) in the UAE provides temporary financial support for private sector and federal government employees who lose their jobs due to layoffs. This unemployment insurance offers short-term income support for individuals seeking new employment.
Here we explain how the unemployment insurance system works, when compensation payments stop, and what factors affect your eligibility.
When can you apply for unemployment insurance compensation?
You can only apply for unemployment compensation after at least 12 months from the date of registration in the involuntary loss of employment insurance scheme. This means you must have continuously registered and paid premiums for a full year to be eligible for compensation.
When do unemployment insurance compensation payments stop?
The insurance company's obligation to pay compensation ends under certain conditions. These include:
- Reaching the maximum payout amount in an insurance certificate period, which is three months of compensation
- Reaching a total maximum of 12 months of compensation across all insurance certificates during your employment in the UAE
- The death of the insured, which terminates coverage from the date of death
Unemployment compensation also stops if you find a new job or leave the country, even if the three-month payment period has not been completed.
How much compensation can you receive?
The payment amount is calculated at 60% of your average monthly basic salary in the 12 months prior to losing your job. The amount you receive depends on your salary category and is capped.
Category A: Basic salary of 16,000 AED or less
Maximum monthly compensation: 10,000 AED
Category B: Basic salary above 16,000 AED
Maximum monthly compensation: 20,000 AED
Payments are made for up to three months for each application, or until you find a new job or leave the UAE, whichever occurs first.
Eligibility requirements for unemployment insurance
To be eligible under this involuntary loss of employment insurance scheme, you must:
- Have registered in the unemployment insurance scheme for at least 12 consecutive months before losing your job
- Have paid all premiums fully and on time, according to your payment schedule
- Have lost your job due to layoffs, not resignation
You are not eligible if you have resigned, been terminated for disciplinary reasons, absconded, or submitted a fraudulent claim.
When and how to apply
You must submit your application within 30 days after the end of your employment contract, or within 30 days after resolving any related employment dispute as decided by the court. Applications must be submitted through the official UAE unemployment insurance website www.iloe.ae.
