WhatsApp Increases Parental Control Over Teen Accounts.
WhatsApp has introduced new features to enhance the security of teenagers, allowing parents to manage their children's privacy settings, receive alerts about certain online activities, and limit access to Meta's artificial intelligence, without being able to see their private messages and calls.
This announcement comes as the UAE is preparing restrictions for children under 15 years old on social media usage.
Parents can condition the approval of changes to their teens' account settings with a six-digit code. These settings include who can see the teen's profile picture and last seen status or add them to groups.
Additionally, parents receive notifications about their child's membership or exit from groups, significant increases in group members, and the addition of new contacts. There is also the ability to manage who can see the teen's statuses, the statuses they have access to, and how to find or follow public WhatsApp channels.
Parents can choose between the default Meta AI experience for individuals over 13 years old or a more restricted mode. The restricted mode limits sensitive topics and disables private or anonymous interactions with the AI.
Despite these controls, personal messages and calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption, and parents do not have access to their content. These features are also optional and not enabled by default.
