Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, has stated that an agreement to end the war with Iran may take shape "today" while emphasizing that Israel has the right to defend itself against attacks.

Rubio said in New Delhi: "We thought we might have news last night or even today, but we shouldn't read too much into this matter." He referred to the possibility of reaching an agreement.

While leaving the Indian capital, where he was on an official visit, he told reporters: "In my opinion, there is a relatively solid plan on the table regarding opening pathways and straits."

He added: "This plan has a lot of support in the region... Any country that has become familiar with it understands that it is not only logical but also the right thing for the world."

Rubio also expressed confidence that Iran would enter into "very real, important, and time-limited negotiations on the nuclear issue."

He made these remarks before continuing his trip in India; a trip that is set to take him to Agra, a northern city famous for the Taj Mahal.

Rubio's statements came after Donald Trump, the U.S. President, moderated expectations about the agreement and said on Sunday that he had instructed his negotiators to "not rush."

Regarding Trump, Rubio said: "He is not in a hurry, does not want to make a bad deal, and the President will not accept any bad deal."
