The UAE intends to expand the scope of its organ transplant program to include surgeries involving the face, hands, arms, uterus, and intestines as the next phase of developing organ transplant services.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention announced that future plans within the framework of the national organ donation and transplantation program, known as Hayat, will include increasing the types of organs and tissues available for donation and transplantation.
Among the planned surgeries are intestinal and uterine transplants, as well as a type of transplant referred to as composite vascular tissue transplantation. These types of transplants can involve complex parts of the body such as the face, hands, and arms.
The implementation of this program will bring organ transplant services in the UAE into highly specialized areas; fields that require the presence of multiple medical teams and precise coordination before, during, and after surgery.
The program aims to expand tissue donation
The Hayat program also intends to broaden the scope of tissue donation to include corneas, bones, skin, and heart valves.
Another area being developed is organ donation after death due to circulatory arrest or DCD. This term refers to organ donation after a person's heart and blood circulation have permanently stopped.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention stated that the development of these methods could help increase access to donated organs and tissues for patients needing life-saving treatments or treatments that significantly impact their quality of life.
These programs are part of the broader efforts of the UAE to strengthen the organ donation system within the country's healthcare system.
