The New Look of Al Taawun Square in Sharjah Unveiled
Do you remember what Al Taawun Square in Sharjah used to look like? This face is set to change. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled the new design of this famous square on Tuesday, September 22, just before its reopening to traffic on November 4, the first day of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF).
The authority explained that the construction of the 500-meter Al Taawun Sharjah-Dubai tunnel underneath the square is still ongoing.
For years, passing through Al Taawun Square during peak traffic hours meant long waits for many Sharjah residents. Some have reported being stuck in the area for at least 20 minutes during busy morning and evening hours, as traffic formed from all four directions towards the square.
The Al Taawun tunnel will have three lanes in each direction and will connect Al Taawun Street to Al Nahda Bridge and Dubai.
This project also includes a new intersection equipped with traffic lights that will have a capacity of about 4,200 vehicles per hour in each direction during peak traffic hours. This part of the project will help reduce traffic around the square and improve access to the Sharjah Exhibition Center, the venue for the Sharjah International Book Fair.
The implementation of the tunnel project was prioritized due to the increasing importance of Al Taawun Street as one of the main traffic arteries between Sharjah and Dubai. This underground route is designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow in the area.
This project will also create more direct access to the Sharjah Exhibition Center and is expected to be part of a transport corridor that will connect to Al Noor Road in the future.
The entire Al Taawun road project is set to be completed in February 2027.
The execution of this project requires the temporary removal of the iconic structure of Al Taawun Square. After the tunnel project is completed, this structure will be reconstructed and reinstalled at its original location with a new design.
