Sensory Room for Children with Autism at Jumeirah Beach
Jumeirah Beach is now calmer for individuals with autism.
For many, going to the beach means a few hours of relaxation by the sea; however, for individuals with autism or those with sensory sensitivities, the crowds, loud noises, bright lights, and heat of the beach can create a stressful experience.
Dubai has now attempted to change this experience. Jumeirah Beach 2 has launched the first 'Beach Sensory Room' in the Middle East; a calm and equipped space where individuals with autism and sensory processing disorders can use it before entering the beach, when feeling sensory overload, or even at the end of the day.
This room is equipped with air conditioning, soft lighting, a quiet environment, and special sensory equipment to help reduce anxiety and provide comfort to visitors. Although this space is designed for individuals with autism, children who are disturbed by crowds or loud noises, as well as adults with sensory sensitivities, can also benefit from it.
This is not the only change at Jumeirah Beach 2. Accessible pathways for wheelchairs and strollers, floating wheelchairs for safe entry into the water, and special swimming platforms for 'People of Determination' have also been added to the facilities of this beach.
These measures have led Jumeirah Beach 2 to receive a gold accessibility certification from the World Disability Union; a title that has made this beach one of the exemplary inclusive beach spaces in the region.
Additionally, beach staff have received specialized training to recognize signs of sensory overload, effectively communicate with visitors and their families, and use special accessibility equipment.
The establishment of this sensory room is part of Dubai's broader program to adapt public spaces and become one of the most accessible cities in the world for individuals with autism, neurodivergent individuals, and 'People of Determination'.
