Second wave of influenza in the UAE? Doctors: It's not too late for vaccination

Influenza cases in the UAE are once again on the rise. Doctors warn that what many thought was the end of the influenza season may likely be a second wave or a continuation of the illness in Dubai and other cities in the UAE. Clinics and hospitals in Dubai are witnessing an increase in patients suffering from fever, cough, and fatigue.

According to doctors' reports, families, elderly individuals, and young children are the most vulnerable groups to influenza in Dubai. The influenza season typically occurs in two phases: Influenza type A peaks in December and January, while type B peaks between February and April.

Reasons for the continued influenza cases in the UAE include cooler weather, more time spent in enclosed spaces, gatherings after holidays, and vaccination coverage lower than optimal. This year's influenza season has been unusually prolonged, and no significant decrease in cases has been observed.

At-risk groups include adults over 65 years old, children under 5 years old, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart diseases. Common symptoms of influenza in Dubai include high fever, severe fatigue, sore throat, dry cough, muscle pain, and runny nose. Doctors recommend that if shortness of breath, persistent fever, dizziness, or chest pain occurs, one should seek medical attention immediately.

Health authorities in the UAE emphasize that it is still not too late for vaccination against influenza in Dubai. The influenza vaccine protects against both types A and B, and even if it does not completely prevent infection, it significantly reduces the risk of severe illness. Preventive recommendations include regular hand washing, staying home when sick, maintaining a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep.
