Russian Health Officials: No Cases of Plague Confirmed

Gooya Dubai 1 min read 478 views

The story began with the death of a 28-year-old woman; an employee who worked at a specialized plague research center in Siberia and died on October 2 after contracting pneumonia of unknown cause.

This was enough to raise concerns. Individuals who had contact with her were placed under medical supervision, more than 60 employees of the institute did not leave the premises, and parts of the hospital where the woman died were also quarantined.

However, the important point is this: no cases of plague have been confirmed so far.

Russian health officials say that the tests conducted have not identified any pathogens related to this woman's work activities, and no incidents related to dangerous pathogens have been recorded at her workplace.

In total, about 200 people who had contact with her are under observation. Among them, two cases of COVID and two cases of rhinovirus infection have been identified, but no other cases of dangerous infectious diseases have been reported.

The sensitivity of the situation is due to the fact that the woman worked at a specialized center related to plague. Pneumonic plague, one of the types of this disease, can be transmitted through respiratory droplets in close contact and can be serious and even fatal if not treated. However, if diagnosed early, it is treatable with antibiotics.

The World Health Organization has currently assessed the risk of this event to the general public as low. Russian officials also state that the situation in the Irkutsk region is stable and no plague outbreaks have been identified.

Therefore, what we currently have in Siberia is a death of unknown cause and a series of precautionary measures, not a confirmed outbreak of plague. The exact cause of this employee's illness is still under investigation.
