The University of Wollongong in Dubai announced that the implementation of the new parking rates has been temporarily halted, and a new model prioritizing students is under review.

The plan to charge 20 dirhams per hour for the use of the underground parking at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), which was set to be implemented next week, has been temporarily suspended following student concerns.

The university stated that in response to student feedback, it is negotiating with Dubai Knowledge Park (DKP) to develop a new parking model that considers students separately from other visitors and provides them with better access. Until the conclusion of this review, the current parking conditions will remain unchanged.

The shortage of parking spaces in the Dubai Knowledge Park area has long posed challenges for students from various universities as well as employees in the area. The underground parking at UOWD is considered the most popular option for students due to its proximity to classes.

According to initial communications, the use of this parking was to be calculated without free hours at a rate of 20 dirhams per hour; a decision that could have imposed significant costs on students considering class durations and exam seasons.

Although some students use the Dubai Metro and the university's free shuttle, many still prefer personal vehicles due to the speed and convenience of commuting; especially those living in farther areas or outside the direct coverage of the metro.

Currently, the implementation of the new rates has been halted, and the final outcome of the negotiations will be announced subsequently.
