New Restrictions on Sodium, Sugar, and Fat Levels in Food Products
New restrictions on sodium, sugar, and fat levels in food products; violators will be fined between 5,000 to 500,000 dirhams.
The UAE has implemented new restrictions on the levels of salt, sugar, and fat in certain packaged food products; a measure aimed at improving nutrition and reducing obesity and non-communicable diseases.
These regulations apply to both products manufactured within the UAE and imported goods, and companies operating in free zones must also comply.
According to these regulations, the levels of sodium, processed sugar, and fat in products such as bread, sweet beverages, flavored yogurt and laban, salty snacks, and processed cheeses will gradually decrease, and producers must meet the set limits by December 31, 2030.
However, for violators, only warnings are not considered. Depending on the type of violation, fines range from 5,000 to 500,000 dirhams.
In more serious cases, the relevant authorities can shut down the violating unit for up to six months; this closure can be extended, and there is even the possibility of revoking the license or activity approval.
