Mbappé and Haaland Break Two Historic Records of Lionel Messi in One Night
Mbappé and Haaland broke two records of Lionel Messi in a historic night.
On Wednesday night, the UEFA Champions League witnessed the record-breaking feats of two young football stars; Kylian Mbappé, wearing the Real Madrid jersey, and Erling Haaland from Manchester City, etched their names in the history of this competition.
Mbappé, during the thrilling 4-3 victory of Real Madrid over Roma, became the youngest player to reach 100 matches in the UEFA Champions League. He set this record at the age of 27 years and 298 days, breaking Lionel Messi's previous record; Messi was 28 years and 84 days old when he reached this number of matches.
Interestingly, Messi also played his 100th match in this competition against Roma; a match in which Barcelona drew 1-1.
In Wednesday night's match, Mbappé also scored the equalizing goal for Real Madrid in the first half. This goal was his seventy-second in the Champions League, allowing him to surpass Raúl González, the Real Madrid legend, and reach fifth place among the top scorers in the history of this competition.
However, Mbappé was not the only record-breaker that night.
Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, became the youngest and fastest player in the history of this competition to reach 60 goals in just 60 matches. At the age of 26 years and 85 days, he broke Messi's age record by just one day.
Haaland scored two goals in the match against Paris Saint-Germain, bringing his total goals in the Champions League to 61; however, Manchester City lost this match 4-2.
For Mbappé, this night was marked by a historic record and a spectacular comeback; Real Madrid initially trailed Roma 3-1, but ultimately managed to win the match 4-3.
Two records were taken from Messi; however, considering the age of Mbappé and Haaland, this competition for setting new records will likely continue.
