«The most common mistake I see is starting too late. Many students and families think that the eleventh or twelfth grades are the right time to think about university admission. Often, families jump straight into test preparation and filling out application forms without taking enough time to explore career options, academic majors, universities, countries, scholarships, or talking to graduates and professionals in various fields.»

He explained that the process of building a student profile should ideally start from the seventh or eighth grade.
«This doesn’t mean increasing pressure, but rather gives the student time to truly discover their interests, build meaningful skills, and create a genuine and authentic narrative; something that universities are looking for.»

Jain warns against what he calls «resume padding»; participating in activities just to look impressive on paper.

He says:
«Top universities, especially Ivy League and Oxbridge, have very professional and meticulous admission teams. They can easily spot inauthentic contributions. What they want is depth, not just a number of activities.»

Experts say that parents in the UAE should encourage their children to engage in long-term interests that are genuine and meaningful, rather than last-minute participation in numerous activities.

Parbhjit Singh, founder and CEO of a related institution, also stated that the biggest mistake both students and parents make is «starting too late.»

He added:
«Many families only start planning in the twelfth grade and focus almost entirely on grades or university rankings.»

According to him, this often leads to rushed applications, clichéd personal statements, and choices that do not truly reflect the student’s personality and goals.
«What makes an application stand out is a well-planned and coherent profile; a profile that shows academic consistency, genuine interests, and personal growth over time. Universities are looking for clarity, purpose, and a clear path, not just high grades on a transcript.»

Application Timeline

Understanding the right timing is crucial for Emirati students, especially those applying for competitive destinations like the USA, UK, Canada, and Europe.

Grades 7 to 9:

A similar system in the UK is UCAS, which allows simultaneous applications to 5 institutions, and in Canada, OUAC is used for universities in Ontario.»

Choosing a University Based on Priorities

Experts recommend that families choose universities based on the following criteria instead of solely focusing on rankings:

Jain added that families should not limit themselves to traditional destinations.
«Beyond the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, countries like Italy, Ireland, Finland, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, and the UAE also offer world-class education, strong post-graduation job opportunities, and residency or talent visa pathways.»

Key Considerations Before Finalizing a University

Parents and students should ensure they have checked the following:

Entry requirements and academic prerequisites

English language requirements and standardized tests

Tuition comparisons and scholarship opportunities

Campus safety, accommodation, and student life

Internship, research, and student exchange opportunities

Volt emphasized that thorough research about each campus is very important.
«From course structures and progression paths to scholarships, campus traditions, and extracurricular opportunities… each campus is unique and offers a plethora of options.»

Enhancing Applications with Volunteer Activities and Online Courses

Grades are still important, but they are not enough on their own.
Jain said:
«Grades are the baseline, but they are no longer a distinguishing factor. When applying to universities where the average applicant has an SAT score above 1500 and an A average, academic excellence is the minimum expectation, not a competitive advantage.»

Universities pay attention to how students have spent their time outside the classroom.

According to a survey by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), nearly 50% of American universities reported that extracurricular activities are «very important» or «important» in admission decision-making.

Peter Davos, CEO and founder of another institution, previously stated:
«Among applicants with similar grades and test scores, often the breadth, continuity, and level of achievement in extracurricular activities are the determining factors.»

Roma Volt also emphasized the importance of volunteer activities:
«Volunteering is a powerful way to demonstrate a student’s empathy and social commitment; whether with the Red Crescent, Dubai Cares, Emirates Environmental Group, or centers working with individuals with disabilities. When a person dedicates their time to others, the learning becomes profound and multifaceted.»

Preparing the University Application

Today, applications are as much about personal narrative as they are about achievements.

Jain said:
«Your application is not just a list of accomplishments; it’s a story. Universities want to know who you are, what drives you, and how their university fits into your life path.»

Volt explained that in applications to American universities, students must list up to 10 activities in Common App.
«Students must declare activities they have participated in since the ninth grade and specify the weekly, monthly, and yearly hours for each activity.»

For the UK, he described the UCAS personal statement requirements as follows:
«In UCAS, applicants must answer three main questions:
Why this major?
How have your studies prepared you?
And what else have you done to prepare?

According to him, these sections allow students to showcase their academic readiness, genuine interest, and personal growth.

Organizing Documents

Parents should ensure all documents are ready well ahead of deadlines, including:
School transcripts and predicted grades

Letters of recommendation

Copy of passport

Language test scores (IELTS/TOEFL)

Standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, UCAT/UKAT, LNAT)

Personal statements and supplemental essays

For competitive majors like medicine, psychology, or law, interviews and group discussions may also be required. Volt added:
«Students intending to enter fields like medicine or psychology may participate in interviews and group discussions; where relevant activities and internships help them shine.»

Submitting Applications

Once the systems open, families should not wait until the last moment. Early submission can increase the chances of admission, especially for:

Universities with rolling admissions

Scholarship deadlines

Housing allocation

Volt also warned that extracurricular activities should not stop in high school.
«One common mistake parents make is enrolling their children in diverse activities in elementary and middle school, but stopping all of them in high school and focusing solely on exam preparation.»

Educational consultants also noted that Emirati students come from diverse educational systems and grading methods that international admission teams may not always be fully familiar with.

Singh added:
«Many students underestimate one of their greatest strengths: multicultural experience. The key is to provide clear context and personal reflection. Students should explain their educational environment and show how experiences like social activities, international competitions, or intercultural leadership have shaped their perspectives.»

Tracking Deadlines

Countries and universities have different timelines:

USA:
There are usually three intakes a year (September, January, and May), but September is the main intake. Early Action/Early Decision deadlines are often in November, and Regular Decision in January.

UK (UCAS):
The main deadline is usually in January; for medicine, dentistry, and Oxbridge, the deadline is earlier.

Canada:
Deadlines vary by province and university and often fall between January and March.

Europe and Asia:
Many universities have rolling admissions or multiple intakes a year.

Parents are advised to have a shared calendar with their child to track deadlines, test dates, scholarship deadlines, and visa scheduling. After submitting applications, the student enters the waiting phase. Upon receiving responses, they can review options and choose a university that aligns best with their goals.
