As the new school year approaches in the UAE, doctors have urged families to include the seasonal flu vaccine on their back-to-school preparation list, alongside buying bags, uniforms, and stationery. According to specialists, the best time to get vaccinated is early to mid-September, as the body needs about two weeks to build the necessary immunity.

A family medicine specialist states that while the flu vaccine may not always prevent illness, it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms if a person does get sick. This not only lowers the chances of hospitalization but also reduces the transmission of the virus to others; a matter that becomes more important with students returning to classrooms.

This vaccine is suitable for everyone aged 6 months and older and will be available at healthcare centers and hospitals in the UAE starting early September. The UAE Ministry of Health, as in previous years, recommends annual vaccination, especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic diseases. Additionally, results from a study by Harvard Medical School have shown that vaccinating children aged 2 to 5 can reduce flu infection rates by up to 14 percent, as children are among the most significant carriers of the virus in environments like schools and daycare centers.
