For years, whenever someone thinks of Dubai, they envision the Burj Khalifa; an 828-meter building that still holds the title of the tallest building in the world. However, it seems this record may not remain in Dubai forever.

Saudi Arabia is simultaneously working on two massive projects that could challenge the Burj Khalifa's position. First is the Jeddah Tower, which is set to exceed one kilometer in height and has recently resumed its construction phase after years of stoppage and delays. This tower is expected to surpass the 91st floor by March 2026, with construction progressing rapidly.

Jeddah Tower is planned to include a collection of luxury residential units, commercial spaces, a Four Seasons hotel, and a viewing platform overlooking the city and the Red Sea. According to the current schedule, the construction of this project is expected to be completed by 2028, at which point it could take the title of the tallest building in the world from Burj Khalifa.

However, Saudi ambition doesn't stop there. Another project named Rise Tower is on the drawing board in Riyadh; a tower with an incredible height of two kilometers that, if built, will break all current world records. This structure will be part of a futuristic city spanning 306 square kilometers and will feature hundreds of floors including luxury hotels, restaurants, office spaces, and observation decks.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged indicating that Emaar Properties is likely working on a new 'super tower' in Dubai; a project that could be the UAE's response to the increasing competition of skyscrapers in the region.

Interestingly, the design of Jeddah Tower is being handled by Adrian Smith; the same American architect who designed Burj Khalifa. Therefore, if everything goes according to plan, the architect of Burj Khalifa may very well break the record of his most famous work.

For now, Burj Khalifa remains the tallest building in the world; however, if Saudi projects proceed on schedule, the crown of skyscraper royalty may shift from Dubai to Jeddah in the coming years.
