Ethiopian woman in Fujairah saves 7-year-old child after falling into a well

A 25-year-old Ethiopian woman in Fujairah did not abandon a 7-year-old boy after they both fell into a well, protecting him until rescue teams arrived despite her broken leg.

The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on Saturday, October 3, in the Merashid area of Fujairah. The child had gone to visit his maternal grandmother's house and, according to relatives, was under the care of two service workers due to hyperactivity.

The well cover behind the house was covered with boards and stone slabs. The child went towards this area, and one of the service workers who had just arrived at the house followed him; however, both unknowingly stood on the well cover. The cover collapsed under their weight, and they both fell into the well.

After falling, the woman, despite her injury and a broken leg, leaned against a metal structure inside the well to prevent herself and the child from sinking further down. She also shouted for help.

Her voice was heard by another service worker who was resting, and he immediately contacted the police and rescue teams.

When the police, civil defense, and national ambulance teams arrived at the scene, the woman first handed the child over to the rescuers and then exited the well herself.

The child was discharged from the hospital the next day, and doctors confirmed his health. The woman is still receiving treatment at Fujairah Hospital.

After the incident, the family installed a safe metal cover, gate, and protective barriers around the well.

The Fujairah Civil Defense has also urged homeowners, farmers, and landowners to keep wells completely safe and covered and to use visible barriers and warning signs around them, as a moment of carelessness can lead to a fatal accident.
