Passengers boarding the Emirates Airbus A380 these days may find themselves in an aircraft that is no longer like its old version. Emirates has introduced its first redesigned A380 after a major refurbishment project; an aircraft that now operates with new cabins, more business class seats, and of course, premium economy on the upper deck.

This aircraft, known by the code A6-EUX, is now operating on the Dubai to Birmingham route and features three classes of service: 76 business class seats, 56 premium economy seats, and 437 economy seats.

The key highlight of this redesign is the addition of the popular Premium Economy cabin to the upper deck of the A380; a section that was previously reserved only for business and first class. The new seats are designed in a 2-3-2 layout and offer amenities such as larger legroom, adjustable headrests, dedicated chargers, side tables, and a 13.3-inch monitor for entertainment.

Emirates has not only changed the appearance of the cabin for this transformation; the company's engineering team has nearly rebuilt the entire interior of the aircraft. To create the new space, 120 economy seats were removed, and the internal structure of the upper deck was altered. This project required approximately 35,000 hours of engineering work and the involvement of nearly 50 engineers and technicians.

This aircraft is the first of 15 two-class A380s that Emirates plans to refurbish by the end of 2026. The project, which started in 2021, has now become one of the largest fleet modernization programs in the world and has been completed on 95 aircraft to date.

Emirates states that the goal of this project is not just to make flights more luxurious; rather, it aims to create a more uniform experience for its passengers across all global routes. Alongside this, some of the old materials from the aircraft are also being recycled; from the fabric of old seats to the creation of backpacks that have been donated to children in various countries.
