Sometimes, just a moment of looking at your phone, or a sudden turn without signaling, is enough for a normal drive to end in an accident. Now, the latest statistics from the Ministry of Interior of the UAE show that these seemingly small behaviors are still the biggest cause of road accidents in the country.

According to the official report, "sudden lane change" has recorded over a thousand accidents, making it the main cause of traffic accidents in the UAE in 2025. After that, distraction behind the wheel and not maintaining a safe distance rank next.

In total, this year over 6,000 traffic accidents have been recorded in the UAE; a statistic that includes over 4,000 vehicle collisions, more than a thousand accidents involving pedestrians, and 800 rollovers.

The statistics show that light passenger vehicles have the highest share in accidents; over 3,800 incidents were related to this category of vehicles. Motorcycles, with more than 1,200 accidents, were the second most accident-prone group on the roads of the UAE.

Alongside sudden lane changes and distractions, issues such as suddenly entering a street without ensuring the path is clear, dangerous driving, running red lights, illegal overtaking, and even tire blowouts have also been cited as frequent causes of accidents.

At the same time, the Abu Dhabi Transport Center has announced that the economic cost of minor and major accidents in this emirate reached 5.2 billion dirhams last year; a figure that only includes material damages.

However, there is also some hopeful news in this report; the road mortality rate in the UAE has decreased by about 46% compared to 2019, and new projects such as the construction of pedestrian bridges and smart crossings are underway to reduce accident statistics.
