In a major infrastructure development project aimed at reducing traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai, His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, announced the construction of a two-lane underground tunnel that will connect Sharjah to Dubai.

The implementation of this project requires the temporary removal of the Cooperation Roundabout monument; however, this monument will be reconstructed and reinstated exactly at its current location after the tunnel is completed.

His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Sultan explained the necessity of this project and its engineering challenges during the “Direct Line” program on Sharjah TV. He emphasized that the Cooperation Road has become one of the vital communication arteries between the two emirates, making the construction of this underground passage essential.

He stated:

“Necessity compels action. The Cooperation Road has become a very important route. This road is the communication link to Dubai. We concluded that we should construct a two-lane underground tunnel that connects to the Dubai road; it will specifically lead to Al Nahda Bridge.”

He clarified:

“I have ordered that this monument be reconstructed exactly with the same previous design and placed back in its location. Currently, this monument will only be affected for a short period by the operations to allow the entry and exit routes of the Cooperation Road to pass underneath it. At the same time, engineers will work on redesigning and reinstalling the Cooperation monument.”

The main goal of this major project is to create a smooth and congestion-free communication corridor between Sharjah and Dubai and to significantly improve traffic flow for the daily commute of citizens and residents.

This announcement was issued in response to public concerns about the removal of this beloved monument and clarifies that this action is a necessary part of a broader plan to enhance infrastructure and increase regional connectivity; at the same time, there is a full commitment to preserving the architectural heritage and urban identity of Sharjah.
