Attempting to End Another's Life in the UAE is Not a Crime
Attempting to end another's life in the UAE is not a crime.
According to the new amendments to the UAE Penal Code, attempting suicide will no longer be considered a crime. This change reflects a shift towards a more humane approach that focuses on mental health support, prevention, and early intervention.
The UAE government announced these changes on Thursday, October 8, in the form of a federal law decree. These amendments, in addition to increasing penalties for those who encourage others to commit suicide or assist them in doing so, also revises some regulations related to sentencing in serious murder cases.
The aim of these amendments is to enhance the protection of human life while balancing legal deterrence, public safety, and humanitarian considerations.
One of the most significant changes in the new law is the decriminalization of suicide attempts; meaning that individuals who attempt to end their own lives will no longer face criminal penalties for this action.
This change is also expected to facilitate early intervention in crisis situations, improve access to healthcare services, and strengthen suicide prevention programs.
While suicide attempts have been removed from the list of crimes, the new amendments impose penalties for individuals who encourage another person to commit suicide or assist them in doing so, proportional to the severity of the crime's consequences.
