An Unusual Will of a Mother in the UAE
An unusual will of a mother in the UAE
A mother in the UAE wants her guardians to seek help from ChatGPT for important educational decisions if she passes away before her son grows up; a unique idea that is set to be registered as a will in Abu Dhabi.
This plan, which is being prepared by a legal company, is based on a protocol titled 'Living Instructions'. A collection of the mother's values, beliefs, principles, and wishes will be made available to artificial intelligence so that the child's guardians can use it as a guide in various situations.
However, ChatGPT is not intended to make decisions on behalf of the mother or have legal authority. Guardians must document their questions, the AI's responses, and their final decisions, and if they act contrary to its suggestions, they must explain their reasoning.
This program also anticipates annual reviews and independent human oversight. As the child grows older, their own wishes and opinions are expected to gain more importance.
In traditional wills, parents can leave recommendations on topics such as education, religion, and healthcare for their children; however, these recommendations usually remain fixed at the time of writing. The designers of this proposal want to investigate whether AI can help guardians better interpret parents' wishes in situations that arise five, ten, or even fifteen years later.
For example, the child may face an unexpected educational choice or family circumstances may change; situations that the mother could not have predicted when writing the will.
Of course, this idea is not without concerns. AI may produce incorrect information, be biased, or change with updates to its models. On the other hand, preserving parents' values should not hinder the formation of the child's independent identity and personal choices.
This will is still in draft form and has neither been registered nor approved by the courts of Abu Dhabi.
Therefore, this proposal is still an experimental suggestion, not a established legal procedure; a proposal that raises an important question: Can technology help preserve parents' wishes after their death, without limiting their children's freedom to create a different future?
