If after hours of working on a laptop or scrolling on your mobile, your eyes burn or images become blurry, you are probably not alone. Dry eye has now become one of the most common problems among those who spend a lot of time in front of a screen; especially in countries like the UAE where the continuous use of air conditioning exacerbates this condition.

Now the UAE has approved the use of a new eye drop called “Miebo”; a medication designed to treat the symptoms of dry eye disease, making the UAE the third country to issue a license for its use.

This treatment, produced by Bausch + Lomb, uses a substance called “perfluorohexyloctane” and is said to be the first prescription drop that directly targets the evaporation of tears, one of the main causes of dry eye. By stabilizing the tear film, this medication helps reduce burning, blurred vision, and discomfort.

The license for this medication was issued after positive results from two clinical studies named GOBI and MOJAVE; research conducted on over 1,200 patients that showed significant improvement in dry eye symptoms.

Dry eye is a common issue among those who work long hours in front of a monitor or spend most of their time in air-conditioned environments; conditions that are very familiar to many residents of the UAE.
