The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has introduced a new unemployment insurance scheme aimed at supporting employees in the private and public sectors. This scheme came into effect on January 1, 2023, and covers employees in the private and public sectors in case of unemployment and job loss due to reasons beyond their control.
Details of the Unemployment Insurance Scheme:
This scheme includes two types of unemployment insurance, each with different premiums based on the individual's basic salary:
Type One: For individuals with a basic salary of 16,000 dirhams or less.
Premium: 5 dirhams per month
Amount received: Up to 10,000 dirhams per month
Type Two: For individuals with a basic salary above 16,000 dirhams.
Premium: 10 dirhams per month
Amount received: Up to 20,000 dirhams per month
The premium can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually and includes value-added tax (VAT).
Conditions for Receiving Unemployment Insurance:
To receive unemployment insurance, an individual must have been actively employed in their previous job for at least 12 consecutive months.
Unemployment Criteria: The individual must have lost their job for non-disciplinary reasons. If the individual loses their job due to resignation or disciplinary issues, they will not be eligible for unemployment insurance.
Payment Duration: Unemployment insurance will be paid for a maximum of three months from the time of unemployment, and payments will cease upon finding new employment.
Applications for unemployment insurance must be made within 30 days of the start of unemployment.
