New Sugar Tax in the UAE; A Step to Combat Public Health Crisis
Starting from January 1, 2025, a new tax system for sugary drinks will be implemented in the UAE, which medical and dental professionals consider an effective step to address the roots of the health crisis in the region. This tiered tax system, announced by the Ministry of Finance and the Federal Tax Authority, directly links the tax amount to the sugar content in the beverages.
According to the new sugar tax regulations in the UAE, drinks containing between 5 to 8 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters will be subject to a tax of 79 fils per liter. Beverages with more than 8 grams of sugar will face a tax of 1.09 dirhams per liter. Products with less than 5 grams of sugar or those that only use artificial sweeteners are exempt from this tax.
Endocrinology specialists believe this policy is more effective than the previous fixed tax, as it directs both producers and consumers towards low-sugar options. Statistics indicate that by 2050, the obesity rate among men over 25 in the UAE will rise from 84% in 2021 to 94%. Additionally, about 21% of the UAE population is expected to have type 2 diabetes by 2024, highlighting the urgent need for serious measures.
Experiences from other countries also confirm the success of the sugar tax. In Ireland, after the implementation of this tax in 2018, sugar consumption from soft drinks decreased by 30%. In the UK, the sugar content in children's diets was halved and reduced by a third in adults. Dental professionals also welcome this policy, as reduced sugar consumption directly leads to decreased tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss.
The UAE market is also adapting to these changes. The country's healthy snacks industry has been growing rapidly and is projected to exceed one billion dollars by 2033. Additionally, the market for sugar-free beverages in the UAE is expected to reach 1.2 billion dollars by 2033. Experts believe this tax should be part of a broader health promotion program that includes public education, better access to nutritious foods, and increased awareness about the prevention of chronic diseases.
