The UAE's drug authority has approved a new medication that reduces blood pressure in hard-to-treat patients by inhibiting a specific enzyme.

For many patients, dealing with high blood pressure is not just about taking a few pills and checking the numbers on a device; some still cannot control their blood pressure despite taking various medications. Now, the UAE has approved a new drug for this group of patients.

The UAE's drug authority (EDE) has announced that the drug 'Baxfondi' has received approval for the treatment of resistant hypertension; a medication whose active ingredient is 'Baxdrostat'.

This drug helps lower blood pressure by inhibiting an enzyme involved in the production of the hormone aldosterone, and it is available in 1 mg and 2 mg doses.

Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, the Director General of the UAE's drug authority, stated that the approval of this drug is an important step towards providing patients with access to more advanced and targeted treatments, especially for those for whom traditional therapies have not been sufficiently effective.

High blood pressure is considered one of the most common health challenges in the UAE, with estimates suggesting that nearly one in three adults lives with this condition. Despite numerous medications, blood pressure control has not yet reached optimal levels in many patients, and officials now hope that the new drug can help fill part of this treatment gap.
