When you receive a job offer in the private sector of the UAE, your contract usually indicates a "total salary." However, upon closer examination, you will find that this amount is divided into various components – basic salary and several allowances such as housing or transportation.

Understanding your basic salary, which is referred to as "basic wage" in the UAE Labor Law, is very important. This is because many of your job benefits are calculated based on this figure, not your total salary.

What is basic salary?
According to the UAE Labor Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021), the basic salary is the amount specified in your employment contract and is paid to you in exchange for your work. This amount is only part of your total compensation package.

Many employers in Dubai and the UAE also offer additional allowances such as housing, transportation, or other incentives. Therefore, your total salary includes the following:
- Basic salary (basic wage)
- Allowances and benefits

By law, allowances may be provided to cover living expenses or related to job performance, such as a percentage of sales or profits.

How to find your basic salary?
If you work in the private sector of the UAE, your basic salary is stated in your employment contract. This document typically includes a breakdown of the following items:
- Basic salary
- Housing allowance
- Transportation allowance
- Any other benefits or incentives

If you do not have a copy of your contract, you can obtain it from your company's human resources portal or download a digital version of your employment contract from the official website or app of the UAE Ministry of Human Resources.

Job benefits related to the basic salary in the UAE
Your basic salary plays a key role in calculating several job benefits in the UAE, which include the following:

1. End-of-service gratuity

The gratuity or end-of-service payment is an amount you receive upon the termination of your employment, provided you have completed at least one year of continuous service. According to Article 51 of the UAE Labor Law, the end-of-service gratuity for full-time foreign employees is calculated based on the basic salary:
- 21 days of basic salary for each year in the first five years of service
- 30 days of basic salary for each additional year thereafter

Each partial year worked is also considered in the final calculation.

2. Unemployment insurance
The involuntary loss of employment (ILOE) scheme provides financial support if you lose your job for reasons beyond your control and meet the eligibility criteria. If approved, you may receive compensation equivalent to 60% of your basic salary for up to three months.

3. Overtime
If your job role qualifies for overtime pay, the additional payment is calculated based on the basic salary, not your total salary including allowances. Note that not all employees in Dubai are eligible for overtime depending on their job category and type of contract.

4. Cashing out annual leave
If you leave your job and still have unused annual leave, you may be eligible for payment for those days. According to Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, Article 19(2), this payment is calculated based on your basic salary.

Why is understanding your basic salary important?
Your total salary may give you a good sense of your monthly income, but your basic salary determines several key financial rights, including end-of-service gratuity, overtime, unemployment insurance, and cashing out annual leave.
