No more need to remove liquids and laptops at the airport: Dubai installs smart scanners for hand luggage

Dubai International Airport is installing advanced security scanners equipped with artificial intelligence that will completely transform the inspection process for passengers' hand luggage. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, announced that over 100 new scanners will be installed at the airport during 2026, with six of them already active.

With this new technology, passengers will no longer need to take off their shoes, remove liquids from their bags, or separate laptops. Passengers simply place their hand luggage on the tray and pass through the security process without stopping. This will create a significant change in the comfort and speed of passenger travel.

The new smart scanners use artificial intelligence to examine hand luggage and automatically determine whether further inspection is needed. This system is faster than manual inspection and provides a more precise security process without causing inconvenience to passengers. Since May 2007, passengers at Emirates airports have been allowed to carry liquids, aerosols, and gels only in containers of 100 milliliters in their hand luggage.

With the full implementation of this system, passengers will be able to freely carry items such as deodorants and creams in their hand luggage, eliminating the need to discard these products and repurchase them at their destination. Griffiths emphasized that this restriction has long been a burden on travelers, and its removal will create significant convenience for travel.

This initiative is part of Dubai Airports' plan to create a seamless travel experience, which also includes a passport-free passage system at immigration and facial recognition check-in. Additionally, Dubai Airport is working on other systems such as flying taxis and a special tunnel for VIP passengers, and contracts for the construction of Al Maktoum Airport are also being finalized.
